Universal Design for Learning - Digital Concept Maps
As a student, I created simple concept maps using pen and paper to
simplify the lessons, understand them, remember important information, and be
successful. Now, this is the first time
I am using and creating a digital concept map for a topic that is big and
important to me as a teacher. Creating a digital concept map for a concept such
as Universal Design for Learning has never been easy. It is a difficult task,
not only in the way I created it but in the way it made me think of it as if I
were in my class. However, the Digital Concept Map enabled me to understand the
concept of Universal Design for Learning and the concepts that relate to it in
an organized, clear, focused, summarized, and meaningful way. In addition, it
increased my focus on these concepts, identifying them, and linking them to
what I watched, learned, and applied in my field experiences. I believe and
ensure that I will remember these concepts and keep them for a long time.
As an aspiring teacher, I believe in the importance of using and applying digital concept mapping in my classroom. It is a visual tool that will motivate my students for observation, visual, critical, and creative thinking. My students will ask questions and discuss their ideas. The discussion will be flexible and interactive. In addition, it will be based on their prior knowledge, what they feel, or what they expect. I will ask them questions for guidance that will enable them to explain reasons, make comparisons, and provide evidence. They will research and conclude, so as a result, their thinking skills will improve. In my lessons, I will use graphic organizers. I will present them to students as a model. Then, they will apply what they learned. I will explain its importance and encourage students to use it in all subjects. I will ask them to design the graphic organizer the way they prefer. I will provide tactile graphic organizers for visually impaired students. I will also use digital concept maps in my lessons. To be more interesting, I will make it in many colors and add to it some pictures. Students will be able to understand the concepts and make connections between them. It will help them collect, understand, organize, and summarize ideas. I will also advise them to take advantage of many websites that they can use and create their own designs, for example, Google Drawings, Google Slides, Canva, Padlet. I am sure they will succeed.
